Higher level teaching assistants
Higher level teaching assistants (HLTA’s) assist teachers with their day-to-day classroom work, the provision and planning of and the creation of lesson materials. HLTA’s teach classes on their own and may be trained in relevant learning strategies such as literacy. They may support students with special/additional needs and work in special and additional needs schools.

Task-by-Task Breakdown
Every task scored individually — sorted highest to lowest AI exposure
assists with development of lesson plans and materials
AI tools like ChatGPT or Google Gemini can draft lesson plan frameworks, suggest activities, and generate differentiated materials, but the HLTA must adapt these to specific pupils' needs and curriculum requirements.
assess, record and report on pupils' progress
AI platforms like Century Tech or Arbor can help track and analyse pupil progress data, but professional judgment and knowledge of individual pupils remain essential for meaningful reporting.
makes simple teaching aids and constructs thematic displays of educational material or children’s work
AI image generators like Canva AI or Adobe Firefly can help design visual teaching aids and display materials, saving time on layout and graphics while the HLTA curates and assembles the final product.
manages and supports other teaching assistants
Managing and mentoring other teaching assistants requires interpersonal leadership and situational judgment, though AI could assist with scheduling or training resource creation.
gives lessons to classes and individual students independently of the teacher
Delivering lessons requires real-time human responsiveness, relationship-building, and classroom management that AI cannot substitute, though tools like interactive whiteboards with AI content can support delivery.
assists teacher with preparation or clearing up of classroom
Physical classroom preparation and tidying requires hands-on presence and dexterity that AI cannot replicate in any meaningful way.
listens to children read, reads to them or tells stories
Listening to children read and storytelling is a deeply human, relational activity requiring emotional attunement and encouragement that AI cannot replicate in a classroom setting.
helps with outings and other out-of-classroom activities
Supervising and supporting children on outings requires physical presence, safeguarding awareness, and real-time human judgment that AI cannot provide.
assists children with washing or dressing for outdoor and similar activities
Assisting children with washing or dressing is an entirely physical, safeguarding-sensitive task that requires human presence and care with no AI application.

Higher level teaching assistants
This is not a pay rise — it's 300 hours of productive capacity that AI could return to you, valued at your current rate.
The portion of your current salary tied to tasks AI can automate or augment. Not a prediction of job loss — a signal of where your role is changing fastest.
How is this calculated?▾
Task weights — each task is weighted by its O*NET frequency rating. Where frequency data is absent, equal weighting is applied.
AI time reduction — tasks scored as "AI Automates" assume 80% time saving; "AI Assists" assumes 40%; "Human-Led" assumes 5%.
Salary equivalent — annual hours saved × (salary ÷ 1,800 working hours/year).
Value at risk — salary × share of role time in AI-automate or AI-assist tasks.
Figures are indicative estimates for planning purposes, not guarantees of productivity gain or job loss risk.
