Production and process engineers
Production and process engineers advise on and direct technical aspects of production programmes to ensure cost-effectiveness and efficiency. This unit group incorporates: planning and quality control engineers who plan production schedules, work sequences, and manufacturing and processing procedures to ensure accuracy, quality and reliability; and chemical engineers who undertake research on commercial scale chemical processes and processed products, design and provide specifications and direct the construction, operation, maintenance and repair of chemical plants and control systems.

Task-by-Task Breakdown
Every task scored individually — sorted highest to lowest AI exposure
studies existing and alternative production methods, regarding work flow, plant layout, types of machinery and cost
AI tools like Siemens Plant Simulation and generative AI can model workflow scenarios, compare layouts, and analyse cost trade-offs, but engineers must validate assumptions and apply contextual plant knowledge.
devises and implements production control methods to monitor operational efficiency
AI-powered MES (Manufacturing Execution Systems) and tools like IBM Maximo can monitor OEE and flag inefficiencies in real time, though engineers must interpret results and implement corrective actions.
undertakes research and develops processes to achieve physical and/or chemical change for oil, pharmaceutical, synthetic, plastic, food and other products
AI platforms like Schrödinger or Citrine Informatics accelerate materials and process research by predicting chemical outcomes, though experimental validation and domain expertise remain critical.
recommends optimum equipment and layout and prepares drawings and specifications
AI-assisted CAD tools like Autodesk Fusion 360 with generative design can suggest optimised layouts and auto-generate specifications, but professional engineering judgment and regulatory compliance review remain essential.
investigates and eliminates potential hazards and bottlenecks in production
AI anomaly detection tools and digital twin platforms (e.g., ANSYS Twin Builder) can identify bottlenecks and simulate hazard scenarios, but root cause analysis and safety decisions require human expertise.
advises management on and ensures effective implementation of new production methods, techniques and equipment
ChatGPT or Claude can help structure implementation plans and summarise technical literature, but stakeholder communication, change management, and contextual judgement on feasibility remain human-led.
liaises with materials buying, storing and controlling departments to ensure a steady flow of supplies
AI-driven supply chain tools like SAP IBP can forecast demand and flag supply risks, but cross-departmental negotiation and relationship management require human coordination.
designs, controls and constructs process plants to manufacture products
AI-assisted simulation tools like COMSOL Multiphysics or Aspen Plus can model process plant behaviour and optimise design parameters, but physical construction, safety engineering, and regulatory approval require human engineers.

This is not a pay rise — it's 720 hours of productive capacity that AI could return to you, valued at your current rate.
The portion of your current salary tied to tasks AI can automate or augment. Not a prediction of job loss — a signal of where your role is changing fastest.
How is this calculated?▾
Task weights — each task is weighted by its O*NET frequency rating. Where frequency data is absent, equal weighting is applied.
AI time reduction — tasks scored as "AI Automates" assume 80% time saving; "AI Assists" assumes 40%; "Human-Led" assumes 5%.
Salary equivalent — annual hours saved × (salary ÷ 1,800 working hours/year).
Value at risk — salary × share of role time in AI-automate or AI-assist tasks.
Figures are indicative estimates for planning purposes, not guarantees of productivity gain or job loss risk.
